When: from 9:15am to 4:00pm

Where: Cathedral Function Centre, 841 Hunter St, Newcastle West NSW 2302 (10 minutes’ walk from Newcastle Station – interchange)

Meals Provided: This is a catered event which includes a delicious morning tea and gourmet lunch.

If You Have Special Dietary Requirements: We will provide vegan, gluten and dairy free options on our menu. The menu will be available closer to the date of the event. However, if you have specific dietary requirements beyond that please bring your own food.

Who Can Come: This seminar is specifically tailored to parents who are exploring home education or looking to reassess, connect, and equip themselves with new teaching tools. Sorry no children but mothers with their nursing babies are welcome.

Michelle, Jo and Catherine are Christians, but this conference is not exclusive to Christians. We’ll share ideas from Charlotte Mason’s educational method but we’re not strictly Charlotte Mason, so you don’t need to be following her method to come.

Show and Tell: There will be time to browse the My Homeschool curriculum and living books during the day. However, no items will be on sale.

About the Speakers

Michelle Morrow has four homeschool graduates. She discovered the Charlotte Mason way of homeschooling early on her homeschool journey. In 2017, she began My Homeschool but she has also been blogging at Homeschooling Downunder for over 10 years.

Jo Lloyd homeschools three children and favours a Classical / Charlotte Mason style of education. She is a university educator with a background in law and geography. Lately, Jo has been helping Michelle develop the My Homeschool curriculum.

Cathy McKay is currently spending herself educating six children, at home. On the fringes of life, Cathy operates a living books library. She also enjoys reading and thinking about Charlotte Mason’s ideas, especially in good company.

Program: Cultivating A Living Education

9:45am – Inspired by Charlotte Mason (Jo)
An overview of the Charlotte Mason method, including the hallmarks and benefits, and how families can apply the method in a modern setting for Christian education.

10:05am – Using Living Books For Teaching (Michelle)
What are they, how to find them, when to read them, and how to make the switch from textbooks.

10:25am – Narration Practice (Jo)
The ins and outs of narration: What it is, how to do it, why we should do it; tips and tricks; an opportunity to give it a try.

10:50am – Morning Tea – Provided

11:20am– Homeschool Paperwork and Documentation (Michelle)
How to make the documentation process easy and sustainable using a few tips learnt along the way.

11:50 am – What About Spelling and Maths? (Jo)
A short session on the basic principles of teaching these two subjects in the CM method.

12:10pm – Nature Study and Nature Notebooks (Michelle and Jo)
Why and how should I do nature study and keep a Nature Notebook and an opportunity to give it a try.

12:40pm – Lunch Break – Meal Provided (1 hour)

1:50pm – Parent Culture (Catherine)
What might it look like to be growing for ourselves as we nurture growth in our children?

2:30pm – Morning Time, Circle Time and Group Work (Michelle)
Teaching as a group is essential when you are teaching more than one child. Picture study, map drills, poetry and more can all be included as a group lesson; an opportunity to give it a try.

2:55pm – Preparing to Homeschool Well (Jo)
How to make meaningful and intentional goals to home educate with purpose, including some ideas on how to work out what matters most for your family and homeschool in 2020.

3:15pm – Question Time (Michelle, Jo and Cathy)
A time for sharing experiences and answering questions.

4:00 pm – Goodbye
