Athanasius – Children’s Book Review

This term we are learning Church history along with our Middle Ages high school studies . I was keen to find biographies on people in the church. One of the stories I was looking for was on Athanasius from 300AD. He was a bishop in Alexandria who fought against heresy and upheld the teachings of the trinity.

Christian Biographies for Young Readers

Athanasius by Simonetta Carr  is a beautiful picture book filled with original painting and paintings of the past. We read this book aloud over 2 days (it’s 62 pages) and then my children wrote out a narration.

The story of Athanasius is told within the context of the Roman empire, some details are brushed over that could be researched more if desired. It includes maps, historical references, interesting facts and the Nicene Creed.

There are many very heavy-going books about the great church leaders of the past but not many for children. This book is recommended for ages 7 to 12 but I enjoyed it as an adult.
