Homeschooling Downunder
Hunter Home Educators officially began about 20 years ago when Carolyn, a zealous mother, wanted to gather a homeschooling support group of like minded home educators around her. Up until 2006 we had a formal newsletter that was faithfully run by Marten and Anne for many years.
Our homeschooling community has grown rapidly over the last few years and their are many different styles and approaches to homeschooling within our area. Therefore the best way for you to get in contact with other homeschoolers is to join the
or visit our blog
We are not an official homeschooling organization in the Hunter but rather a group of parents who all pitch in and take responsibility for organizing particular events.
According to the Newcastle Herald there are about 300 students registered with the NSW board of studies in 2009. That number is growing rapidly and is over 1000 now. At our Feburary 2010 Swimming Carnival we had more than 100 children attend.
If you want to start getting to know some more homeschoolers in the region, attend some events or ask some advice from local homeschoolers we recommend you visit and join Hunter Home Educators Forum
There are many events organised throughout the year, all of these are advertised on the forum.
With many events we need insurance to hire the venues. The HEA provides the insurance needed to run events. HEA is therefore encouraged for many events. This is decision is up to the organizer to decide. (Not being a member will mean extra costs at events.)
