Teaching language arts can be done without a workbook BUT many of us do not have the confidence to do that.
These resources teach a variety of English skills.
Emma Serl Primary Language Lessons; this is a two year program for grades two to three.
Combine with daily copywork and reading program to complete your language arts program.

Spelling can be taught during dictation. If you use the Emma Serl Primary Language Lessons this is part of the resource.
If you feel that they are ready you can begin to introduce cursive.
In schools this is usually done around grade 3-4. See my blog for some tips on introducing cursive.
